FELT FLAMINGO LOGO

Alex Severson, a local musician and music producer, contacted me about creating a logo for his new venture — a subscription site that offers music hooks and beats. Alex came to me with an idea of what he wanted, and together we collaborated to bring his vision of his logo to life.

We sat down and talked about his personality and how that’s manifested in the brand, why he chose flamingos, and what about this bird made him want to have this animal symbolize his brand. We also discussed who the competitors were in this space and the audience he wanted to reach. We ultimately decided to move forward with the flamingo motif because not only is the bird symbolic to Alex himself, the flamingo as a contemporary symbol with the right stylistic approach would attract and feel relevant to Alex’s audience.

After meeting with Alex, I began by producing a moodboard to ensure I was capturing the tone he was looking for and that the visual notes resonated with him.

Given that Alex is both an artist and a producer, I wanted to create Alex’s logo in the same manner — authentically and by hand. I took Alex’s flamingo idea and the moodboard as a starting point and began to explore various flamingo symbol directions. Through sketching and inking by hand, I was able to produce a truly unique logo.

LOGO SKETCHES

Once the logo concept was sketched out and approved, I hand drafted and inked the logo before digitizing the mark — skill that harks back to my college training in the craft of traditional graphic design.

The logo is a strong and simple one. The form is bold and expressive, ensuring that this mark works first in black and white, and avoiding contemporary visual trends so that Alex’s mark will stand the test of time
