BABES RIDE OUT BORREGO 2021
12 October 2021
Back from Babes. What an adventure! 1,728-ish miles or more. My first time leading a trip, taking Audrey on her first long distance, multi-day motorcycle road trip. We went through the Mojave Desert, Joshua Tree, and into Borrego Springs. Then around the Salton Sea to witness anti-capitalism in Slab City and the spiritual devotion of Salvation Mountain. We nearly touched the Mexico/US border, then back up through the middle of nowhere desertland to see the Kill Bill Church and through the Tehachapi mountain pass back into the Valley.
Our last day was a true test of skill and trust in one another through Red Flag wind storms up the valley for 280 miles to home. I am so grateful to have made it through safely and without incident. Fresno with construction, too many semis to count, and the wind was scary, then Fresno to Stockton in the low visibility dust and high wind was yet another test of riding and grit. But we made it. We did it. And are better riders, closer friends, and humbler souls for it.
I find such calmness after these trips. To see the landscape of my home state like I have never before. True exploration and adventure, fulfilling the dreams of my childhood. A test of physicality, mentality, and character. We didn’t hang a whole bunch at camp or with others. But we found fulfillment in our journey through the desert together, and as individuals on our bikes. Spiritual in many ways. You, the bike, your gear to survive, and the open landscape around you. Engulfed and immersed in the elements as you are. Cold, hot, wind, still, physical fatigue, and awe. You, the elements, and your travel partner. As we ride we develop a rhythm and a speechless communication. An awareness and connection while we each still ride our own ride. Support and patience as the inevitable unplanned arises with the bikes, navigation, or physical and mental fatigue. We do not fault the other or judge—but simply show up with love, generosity, and grace to be helpful in whatever situation arises.
We may not have indulged in so much of the party, and may have been a little shy to introduce ourselves to some of the ladies we admire and are acquainted with. But in the end, I believe we achieved the essence of Babes Ride Out; “like minded riders who share a sense of adventure and a love for exploring the world on two wheels”.
